NYSC statement against Raye wrong, says lawyer Inibehe Effiong

TikToker Ushie Raye's lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has said the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is wrong about the reason why his client was unable to obtain a certificate after completing the mandatory one-year youth service.

Raye had taken to social media to accuse the NYSC of punishing her for speaking up against the government a few months back.

According to her, the scheme refused to give her certificate after she completed the youth service in April.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Caroline Embu, the NYSC spokesperson, described the allegations circulating online as false and without basis, stating that Raye was disciplined for absence during the April clearance.

“Contrary to these claims, Raye is one of 131 corps members whose CNS was withheld not as punishment for dissent, but for valid disciplinary reasons.

“Specifically, her service year was extended by two months because she failed to attend the April biometric clearance, as required by the NYSC Bye-Laws,” the statement read.

Reacting, her lawyer described the statement as false, stating that he has been directed to issue a rebuttal.

Effiong wrote, "The statement issued by the Management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on its decision to extend the service period, and withhold the Certificate of National Service of Corps Member Ushie Rita Uguamaye (alias Raye), does not represent the truth of the matter.

"I have her instructions as her counsel to respond appropriately to the statement.

"History will vindicate the just."
