A member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Kamoru Omokoye, has been shot dead by suspected cultists at Abijo Bus Stop in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State.

Omokoye was reportedly shot in the head on Sunday morning after two men arrived in an unregistered Lexus RX 350. The attackers fled immediately after the shooting. A police source who spoke to PUNCH Metro on Monday said the incident occurred around 9am.

“The incident occurred around 9am on Sunday. Two men suspected to be cultists arrived at Abijo Bus Stop in an unregistered Lexus RX 350 and shot the deceased victim, who was a member of the NURTW. The attackers immediately sped off from the scene. The deceased was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Epe, Lagos State, for treatment. However, he was pronounced dead by a doctor on duty at the medical facility.

“On receipt of the information, detectives visited the scene and the area was combed for possible arrest of the suspects.” In a separate account, anti-cultism advocacy platform Naija Confra said Omokoye, also known as Zobo, was at a spot where local gin was sold when the assailants opened fire. The platform reported that at least three other people sustained gunshot wounds.

“Zobo was reportedly sitting at a drinking (Ogogoro) spot with others at the bus stop when the attackers arrived and opened fire. Some people ran away, while at least three people sustained gunshot wounds. Zobo was killed in the attack. He had reportedly worked at Awoyaya Bus Stop before moving to GRA Bus Stop and was said to have an eight-month-old child,” the platform wrote.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Abimbola Adebisi confirmed the incident. “The police have commenced investigation into the incident,” she said. The shooting follows a separate killing reported in the community in September. A mechanic identified as Samson was allegedly lured to a location under the pretext of repairing a Mercedes-Benz before being taken into a bush and hacked to death.
