The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr. Aminu Yusuf Wushishi, has died following a brief illness.

Wushishi passed away on Friday, August 28, 2026, with news of his demise reaching Minna, the Niger State capital, around the time of the Juma’at prayer.

His Special Adviser on Media, Stanley Nwosu, confirmed the tragedy to journalists, stating simply: "Yes, it is true. The NPC chairman died after a brief illness."

Reactions and condolences have begun pouring in from across Niger State and the country.

The Digital Rector of Niger State Polytechnic, Zungeru, Amb. Dr. Ibrahim Umar Kontagora, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Wushishi as a distinguished public servant whose legacy will endure.

"It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that [we extend] deepest condolences to the entire good people of Kontagora Emirate over the painful loss of Alhaji Aminu Yusuf Talba Wushishi.

"His passing is a great loss not only to his immediate family and loved ones, but also to the people of Kontagora Emirate, Niger State, and Nigeria at large," he wrote.

Wushishi officially assumed leadership of the NPC on December 2, 2025, succeeding Nasir Kwarra at the helm of the country's demographic agency.

Prior to his appointment to the commission, Wushishi built a robust academic and public service portfolio, including serving as the Secretary of the Niger State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
