NNPC GMD blames pipeline explosion on ROW encroachment

The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mele Kyari has blamed the gas pipeline explosion that occurred in Lagos State on the right of way (ROW) encroachment by gas handling vendors and construction of houses which aggravated the impact.

This was contained in a statement by the NNPC boss while he arrived Lagos to make an on the spot assessment of the explosion that also ignited an NNPC product pipeline.

Explaining how the explosion came to be, Kyari said a spark ignitied fire from the extensively charged atmosphere that emanated from gas cylinder leakages. He revealed that an NNPC pipeline was also impacted and ignited. However he noted that the fire was being contained by combined efforts of NNPC, and Federal Fire Service.

The NNPC boss expressed his sincerest sympathy to the affected on the loss of lives and properties whilst appreciating the fire services, security agencies, the Red Cross and other stakeholders for their timely intervention.
