NIMC reacts to claims that the old national I.D card is an alternative to NIN

Amid the confusion that has characterized the registration of the National Identification Number (NIN), the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has debunked claims that the sequel number of the old National Identity card can be an alternative for those yet to enroll for their cards.

The claim was made in a viral message on the popular messaging platform, WhatsApp stating that the "seq number" can now be used as a substitute.

The post reads: "For those that have not done their NIN registration, and they have the old national identity card, just look at the back of the card, you will see Seq number."

"That is your NIN number. Use it appropriately with the code of any network. E.g for MTN *785*seq. number# then send."

"You will be successfully registered, pls kindly share."

Reacting in a tweet Wednesday, January 27, 2021, the NIMC said the process of the old identification card has been discontinued, urging everyone who is yet to enroll for NIN to do so.

"The OLD National Identity card has been DISCONTINUED. If you still hold the old ID card, you should enrol for the National Identification Number (NIN)," NIMC said.

The state agency further debunked the claims that those who registered for BVN automatically have NIN.

Reacting to earlier comments that those who registered for the Bank Verification Number (BVN) as early as 2014 already have NIN and do not need to register for it again, NIMC's spokesperson, Kayode Adegoke, said the claim is incorrect as the commission must capture peoples’ data first before allocating NIN to them.
