National Directorate of Employment in Borno State under its Rural Employment Promotion has trained 50 youths and women as Agriculture Extension personnel to generate employment opportunities for trained youths to increase food production and improve farming methods.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony of the training held in Maiduguri, Director General of NDE Abubakar Nuhu Fikpo, said that the objective of the workshop was to reduce rural-urban migration of tertiary school graduates to serve as Agric Extension Officers.

Represented by the State Coordinator of NDE, Mairo Betara Aliyu, Fikpo explained that the target groups for the training are youths who have an interest in agricultural advisory services to reduce the drudgery associated with traditional farming practices and stimulate the rural economy.

He said, “Agricultural extension is very important to the successes of agribusiness and they help in extending the use of scientific and technological driven services to farmers in order to guarantee disease-free production, high-quality yields and stress-free processing.”

The State Coordinator noted that Agricultural extension services played a crucial role in boosting agricultural productivity, increasing food security, improving rural livelihood and promoting agriculture as an engine of economic growth.

She charged the participants to make optimal use of the skills acquired and become the agents of positive change and self-reliance.
