NBA will reunite lawyers - Akpata

Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President Olumide Akpata Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President Olumide Akpata

Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President Olumide Akpata on Tuesday pledged his commitment to unify lawyers and restore the association’s glory.

He promised to, in the coming weeks, unveil plans to make the NBA more beneficial to young lawyers.

Akpata stated this in a series of tweets on his official Twitter handle, hours after attending the Call to Bar of new lawyers in Abuja.

It was gathered that 1,785 graduates of the Nigerian Law School were called to the Nigerian Bar yesterday.

The NBA has been facing threats to its unity on several fronts, following doubts over the credibility of its last national officers’ elections, a breakaway bid by two Kaduna-based lawyers, and a move by the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami (SAN) to weaken its powers.

Akpata, who did not directly address these concerns, promised that the NBA under him will be different.

He said: “This afternoon, I attended the ceremony marking the formal Call to Bar of the newest lawyers in Nigeria.

“I wish to commend each of them for their efforts and resilience in the face of the tortuous journey to fulfilling their dreams and attaining their rightful seats as ministers in the Temple of Justice, despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their activities as students at the Nigerian Law School.”
