The Nigeria Bar Association annual general conference slated for August 25 to September 1, was marred with several dramas leading to a chaotic programme.

Some officers of the NBA came out to accuse the NBA President, Yakubu Maikyau SAN of deliberately undermining them.

On Thursday, August 31, during the 2023 Annual General Meeting (AGM), the National Treasurer, Caroline Anze-Bishop refused to announce the financial records of the NBA, stating that the statement was given to her to read without her input.

Speaking before the entire association filled with legal practitioners, Anze-Bishop refused to adopt the financial report, saying she respects the association of lawyers too much to sign off on unknown accounts.

The 2nd Vice President Chukwuemeka Clement Ugo spoke about how Maikyau sidelined him despite his constitutional duties as acting president when the president is absent.

Ugo, who seemed emotional while speaking about the treatment, pleaded for the empowerment of his office at the AGM.

Also, 3rd Vice President Mandy Asagba accused Maikyau of disregarding her office and enacting deliberate measures to render her position useless.

Asagba noted that the entire Annual General Conference planning excluded national officers.

Responding to the allegations leveled against him, Maikyau accused the national officers of resentment because he refused to share lawyers’ annual practicing fees with them, referencing past attempts to share millions in NBA funds which he blocked.

According to him, the officers came to the National Executive Council meeting with the intent on squandering BPF money. He noted that when he opposed their plans, they rebelled.

Maikyau was reported to have spoken extensively but rejected the right of others to respond. The AGM ended abruptly amidst shouts and chaos, causing Maikyau to adjourn the meeting.

several Nigerians who were disappointed at the occurrence at the NBA Conference took to social media to share their thoughts;

@princej_11: That's why they're are always held hostage by the government because of their corruption involvement.

@chuxenyi: Wow she is brave!
That NBA chairman is corrupt and should be properly investigated

@SunnetplanetC: I am not surprised at all ..... That man that confidently defended 2023 elections as free and fair and find nothing wrong with Supreme court judgement on Ahmed and Akpabio.

@lookwhoIbecame: I’m glad I voted right by her. I eternally regret my vote for Maikyau. Never again

@XDOTCOM007: Says a lot about the country.
Every reputable organization of note hv been bought by the political merchants.
We are on our own in this fight Nigerians.

@Capolutiti: Am not surprised based on his past antecedents, I expected his colleagues to stop his election back then but he scaled through due to the political force backing him up with money that ensured he won.

He was planted there and activated after the recent elections to bastardize the NBA election report and demerit the international observers report as well among other things, it’s a long game they planned ahead.

@Bethel_Anun: The Bar and the Judiciary are separate compositions. But yeah! the level of atrocities and moral bankruptcy in the legal system in Nigeria right now is so alarming and depressing at the same time.

@Balatic: Omo, NBA that should be at the fore front of the fight against corruption. It’s finished
