Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle has vowed that his team will deliver an improved performance in Sunday’s final against DR Congo after identifying areas for correction from the 4-1 victory over Gabon, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
When asked by Flashscore what his team would do differently in the winner-takes-all encounter, the Franco-Malian tactician said, “I will watch this game again because we did a lot of good things, but bad things too.
“We have to correct some things before the next game, and I am confident in my team, and I know that they will do better than they did against Gabon.”
Nigeria characteristically took the hard route to victory against the Panthers on Thursday, with Akor Adams opening the scoring in the 78th minute before Mario Lemina levelled matters one minute into added time. Victor Osimhen’s brace in extra time, after substitute Chidera Ejuke had restored Nigeria’s lead, sealed the 4-1 triumph.
Chelle emphasised his continued focus on building a clear identity for the Super Eagles.
“The most important thing for this team is to create an identity. This identity is how we play the defence and the offence. This is why we try to improve at every FIFA window,” he said.
“These guys have improved technically, mentally, and they understand what I want to do for them.”
The three-time continental champions have now won five of their last six outings, netting 10 times and conceding just three times across the most recent three matches, so confidence is expected to be high heading into Sunday’s African finale.
Since Chelle took charge, Nigeria has gone unbeaten, securing five wins and two draws to book a place in the final stage of the World Cup playoffs. The Malian tactician’s record includes victories over Rwanda (twice), Ghana, Lesotho, Benin Republic and Gabon, with draws against Zimbabwe, Jamaica, Russia and South Africa.
The Super Eagles will face DR Congo at the Stade Prince Héritier Moulay Hassan on Sunday at 8pm, with the winners progressing to the intercontinental playoffs scheduled for Mexico in March 2026.
