More charges may be brought against the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.

The embattled Emefiele is facing a 20-count charge over an alleged conspiracy to carry out procurement fraud, among others.

He was charged alongside one Sa’adatu Yaro, an employee of the CBN, and a firm known as April1616 Investment Ltd.

The arraignment, which was initially scheduled for August 17, was stalled due to the absence of Sa’adatu Yaro, Emefiele’s co-accused.

Reacting to the charges against, Emefiele, Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity disclosed that more charges may be brought against the suspended Governor as investigations are still ongoing.

"I think I should not preempt the ongoing investigation but I think Nigerians to understand that there has been an independent external auditor appointed to investigate the CBN Governor and that process has not yet been concluded which may mean that it is reasonable to suspect that more may be known soon," he said on Channels Television on Monday, August 28.

Ngelale disclosed that the case against Emefiele will play itself out.

"I think at last count, there are some new charges that have been filed and prepared. The suspended governor of the CBN has those charges to answer and we believe that the judicial process will play itself out."

"We want to ensure that we avoid the tendency for sensationalism with this kind of sensitive matter. On one hand, many Nigerians want the institutions to work, we want investigations to play themselves out, we want to ensure we get to the conclusive end to this investigative and prosecutory processes. On the other hand sometimes there are segments of the media sometimes just that no there should be some sort of intervention and that the man should be more important than the institution."

"We believe that the rule of law is paramount and we believe that the processes should play out we are asking for the patience of all observers."
