Monkeypox: Osun confirms index case

The Osun State Commissioner for Health, Rafiu Isamotu has confirmed the first case of Monkeypox in the state.

Isamotu disclosed that the first case was reported in Iperindo, the headquarters of Atakumosa East local government area last week.

While confirming the development to journalists in Osogbo, the Health Commissioner said the patient had fully healed from the pox before the result of the laboratory analysis conducted on him came out positive.

Another suspected case of Monkeypox was also reported in the state capital, Osogbo.

It was gathered that a 14-year-old boy with Monkeypox symptoms was brought to the State Hospital, Asubiaro, Osogbo on Monday.

Hospital sources disclosed that the boy presented with a body full of rashes and sores and was subsequently admitted while infectious disease experts and personnel from the Disease Surveillance Notification Unit attended to him.

The Commissioner who explained that he was not aware of the case at Asubiaro, however, explained that it remained suspected until laboratory analysis confirmed that it is indeed a case of Monkeypox.
