Moment Obasanjo shouted at Oyo monarchs to stand up to honour him at an event

Former president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, is in the trends after a video of him ordering traditional rulers to get up and greet him at a public event hit the internet.

Obasanjo who was not pleased with the show of respect from the monarchs called them out in public.

In the video Obasanjo who spoke in the Yoruba language, said that when he was a president, he prostrated to greet kings and in the inner room the bowed before him.

According to him, a governor's position is more powerful than any monarch and he expects the them to show him the respect now that he has retired.

"Please you Kings. Thank you for coming but let me say something. Wherever a governor or a President is, there is no King there. You must stand up for the governor or the President. Stand Up!'' he shouted.

The monarchs immediately stood up, after which he asked them to sit down. He added that in Yorubaland, they reverence two things, age, and position.

"The governor's position is a more powerful position than any monarch.

“Even when I was president, I prostrate to show respect to monarchs. But in the inner room, the monarch prostrate to me,” he said.

Olusegun Obasanjo has been the head of state from from 1976 to 1979 and later became president of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007.
