More than 1,000 deradicalized Boko Haram members who were in the custody of the Nigerian military have allegedly been released to the Borno State government on Wednesday, July 15, 2021.

According to SaharaReporters, the now repented insurgents were handed over to Hajiya Zuwaira Gambo, the Commission of Women Affairs and Social Development at a ceremony on Wednesday, July 14.

She represented Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum.

A military source told Punch that the handing over ceremony was slated for an earlier date but was later postponed following the appointment of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant-General Faruk Yahaya.

The source revealed: “The army handed 1,009 Boko Haram insurgents to the state government today (Wednesday). It was done in secret. We were warned not to allow journalists to the venue.”
