Championship strugglers, Middlesbrough, have sacked coach Jonathan Woodgate and replaced him with 71-year-old Neil Warnock.

The 40-year-old, Woodgate's fate was sealed after they were thumped 3-0 at home to Swansea on Saturday in their first game back after the season's restart to leave them out of the drop zone on goal difference.

A club statement confirmed: “MFC can confirm that head coach Jonathan Woodgate has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect. “Jonathan was relieved of his role on Tuesday morning and will be replaced by the experienced Neil Warnock.

“Warnock will assume responsibility immediately. “The club would like to place on record its thanks to Jonathan for all his work in the role of head coach.”

Warnock takes over with just eight games remaining and heads to relegation rivals Stoke City on Saturday for his first match in charge.

The 71-year-old has been out of work since last November after three years at Cardiff.

Boro are the 16th club of Warnock's managerial career, which began at Gainsborough Trinity in 1980, and has seen him win promotion to the top flight on four occasions, the last with Cardiff in 2018.
