Argentina's assistant coach Pablo Aimar could not hold back his tears after Lionel Messi scored a beautiful goal against Mexico.

Messi took matters into his own hands by firing a shot from outside the box to give Argentina the lead in a cagey affair at the Lusail Stadium.

It was a goal that took the pressure off Albiceleste, who desperately needed maximum points. Aimar broke down into tears as Messi raced off to celebrate his goal with the rapturous crowd in Qatar.

Aimar and Messi share a beautiful story as the latter looked up to the former while growing up. Aimar, now 43 years old, played as a striker alongside Messi at the 2006 World Cup.

His emotions after Messi's 64th-minute goal was a sign of relief for the whole Argentina squad, who were starting at an early exit from the group.

Lionel Scaloni's side now have the chance to finish as group winners when they face Poland in their last match.
