Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers says meeting Jose Mourinho during this season’s Europa League campaign was a special moment for him, having grown up as a Chelsea supporter, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The 30-year-old, who was recently crowned Rangers’ top scorer for the 2024/25 season, reflected on memorable moments from his career while speaking to a Breda newspaper.
“I spoke to him (Mourinho) once in Italy after a match and when I play against him now, he recognises me. He even came to say hello after the game,” Dessers said.
“I think that’s quite special. Especially when you consider a few years ago I was playing with NAC Breda away to Achilles ‘29 in the Dutch second division! I was a Chelsea supporter as a child, so I really grew up with him.”
The Nigeria international’s goal against Manchester United at Old Trafford during Rangers’ Europa League quarter-final run was another highlight of his season.
“My goal against Manchester United at Old Trafford was, of course, the pinnacle,” he said.
“My brother texted me after the match and said ‘Do you realise you’ve just scored at Old Trafford!’ You can also look back on that with pride after your career.”
Despite facing criticism throughout the season for missed chances, Dessers netted 24 goals across all competitions for the Light Blues, while also providing seven assists. His last goal came during Rangers’ 2-2 draw with St Mirren on Saturday.
The former Cremonese man picked up the prestigious Sam English Bowl at the Rangers Player Awards Ceremony on Sunday night, succeeding captain James Tavernier who claimed the top scorer award last season.
Dessers insists he has loved every moment at Rangers and believes playing for them, Feyenoord and NAC Breda has made his career successful.
“There is a raw edge to each of these three clubs – Rangers, Feyenoord and NAC Breda,” he said.
“That is something I like. Some like a fashionable or stately club, I like clubs where it is very pure and passionate. That is really reflected in these three clubs. I also know if you don’t perform, it’s extra tough. But when it goes well, they are the most beautiful clubs in the world.
“So I am lucky that I have been able to play for three of those clubs that are also truly exceptional in that respect. At Rangers, Feyenoord and NAC Breda, my friends and family who come to visit all say, ‘Wow, this was not normal and I didn’t expect it’.
“I think that is something very special and I am proud of it.”
Despite his impressive goalscoring record, Dessers’ season has been a rollercoaster. He was frequently under scrutiny from Rangers supporters, faced questions over his performances, and temporarily lost his starting place to Moroccan youngster Hamza Igamane in November.
However, showing commendable resilience, he fought back to claim a starring role under manager Barry Ferguson.
