Meet Nigeria's twelve gold medalists at the Commonwealth games

The closing ceremony of the 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG) was held yesterday, August 8.

It was Nigeria's 15th appearance at the games which was held in Birmingham, UK.

Team Nigeria produced their best ever performance at the CWG winning 12 gold medals, their best in history.

The team surpassed the previous record of 11 gold medals won at the 1994 Games in Victoria, Canada, 2010 New Delhi, India, and 2014 Glasgow, Scotland.

The team also won 9 silver medals and 14 bronze medals in addition to the 12 gold medals making a total of 35 medals.

It is important to emphasise that Nigeria finished in 7th position on the medal table behind Australia(178), England(176), Canada(92), India(61), New Zealand (49), and Scotland (51).

Athletics and Para Athletic

Team Nigeria won half of their total gold medals in this category.

Ese BRUME

Brume won a gold medal for Nigeria in the Women's Long Jump event on Sunday, August 7.

She jump 7.00m to set a new game record to win what turned out to be Team Nigeria's last medal at the event.

Tobi Amusan, Favour Ofili, Rosemary Chukwuma, Nzubechi Grace Nwokocha, Joy Chinenye UDO Gabriel

The quartet combined won a gold medal for Nigeria in the Women's 4 x 100m Relay on Sunday, August 7.

They clocked the 42.10s to win the gold and set a new game record.

Tobi Amusan

Nigeria's athletic queen also clinched a gold medal in the Women's 100m Hurdles event on Sunday, August 7.

Eucharia Njideka Iyiazi

Iyiazi also won a gold medal for Nigeria in the Women's F55-57 Shot Put event on August 6.

Goodness Chiemerie Nwachukwu

Nwachukwu won a gold medal in the Women's Discus Throw F42-44/61-64 on August 4.


Chioma Onyekwere

Onyekwere clinched a gold medal in the Women's Discus Throw on August 2.


Para Powerlifting events

Nigeria won a single gold medal from this category.


Alice Folashade Oluwafemiayo

Oluwafemiayo was the only athlete to win a gold medal Para Powerlifting category.

She won the medal in the Women's Heavyweight event on August 4.


Weightlifting events

Team Nigeria managed two gold medals in this category.


Rafiatu Faolashade Lawal

Lawal won a gold medal in the Women's 59kg event on July 31.


Adijat Adenike Olarinoye

Olarinoye also clinched gold in the Women's 55kg weightlifting event.


Wrestling

Team Nigeria won three gold medals in this category.


Miesinnei Mercy Genesis

Mercy Genesis won gold in the Women's Freestyle 50 kg event on August 6.


Blessing Oborududu

Oborududu also clinched gold in the Women's Freestyle 68 kg wrestling event on August 5.


Odunayo Folasade Adekuoroye

Adekuoroye also managed a gold medal in the Women's Freestyle 57 kg wrestling event.
