A video of the Senate passing the motion to 'allow the poor breath' while halting the proposed increase in electricity tariffs has sparked massive reaction.

At plenary on Tuesday, July 25, Senator Yunus Akintunde (APC Oyo Central) presented before the senate a plea on behalf of Nigerians to put on hold the planned hike on electricity tariff by the eleven Distribution Companies (DISCOs).

Senator Akintunde had in the motion titled: “Need to halt the proposed increase in electricity tariff by eleven successor electricity distribution companies, DISCOs”, said that the planned policy would cause further hardship on Nigerians if implemented.

Adding that, “the proposed increase will significantly impact the affordability of electricity for average Nigerian, further exacerbating the financial burdens faced by households and businesses.

“it would impede industrial growth, job creation and economic development while it would also have adverse effects on the nation’s drive towards sustainable development and poverty reduction.”

At the end of the debate, the Senate passed the motion to allow Nigerians to breathe, causing laughter among the senators.

The video which hit the internet, brought about massive reactions from social media users.
