The Rector of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria Oron, Commodore Duja Effedua (retd), has advised the Nigeria Maritime University (NMU) cadets to shun acts of cultism and other vices that would jeopardize their studies and future by extension.

Effedua stated this on Wednesday when he received the Vice Chancellor of NMU, Prof Emmanuel Adigio represented by the Dean, School of Maritime Transport and Logistics, Dr. Victor Omoke after he led the Cadet of the University on an educational tour of the Academy.

Effedua, who also advised them to be focused in their studies called for collaboration in the area of training between the Maritime Academy and NMU Cadets adding that as part of the contribution of the Academy to fast track the partnership process would offer free accommodation and reduce fees for NMU Cadets who would take up Mandatory/Short Courses in the Academy.

On the achievements recorded, the Rector said he was able to add value to the Academy through funds gotten from blocked financial loopholes in the system.

He also attributed the achievements to the cooperation exhibited by members of staff and management.

According to him, “We were able to achieve all that we achieved today with the funds obtained from blocking financial loopholes that existed in the system before assumption in office,” the Rector said, adding that the cooperation of his Staff and Management also helped in the achievement.

“Initially, when I was appointed the Rector, I was ashamed because of how the academy was, but then we worked day and night and I am happy to say that we have made significant changes.

“Your school can take advantage of the facilities we have here, likewise mine, whatever we can do for your school to help develop the maritime industry would be done, our doors are open.”

Earlier, in his remarks, Vice Chancellor of the Nigeria Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Delta State, who was represented by represented by the Dean, School of Maritime Transport and Logistics, Dr. Victor Omoke, commended the Rector for his outstanding efforts at repositioning the nation’s premier maritime education and training centre to world class in less than 4 years in office.

He said “I visited the Academy a few years ago and it is nothing compared to what I have seen today, the transformation is massive.

“In Nigeria, people crave for second term even when they did not achieve much in their first tenure, I am of the opinion that the second term should be considered on the strength of one’s performance during the first term, I want to add that from all indications you deserve a second term,” he added.
