Lookman names James as toughest defender

Ademola Lookman has identified Reece James as the toughest defender he has faced in his career, placing Virgil van Dijk second on his list, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Atlético Madrid winger made the revelation in an interview with ESPN, reflecting on his experiences against top defenders across Europe.

Lookman, who has been in impressive form since completing a €35m move from Atalanta in January, said encounters with Chelsea captain James stood out as particularly challenging.

The Nigerian international has faced James on multiple occasions, especially during previous links with Chelsea FC, but is yet to register a goal or assist against the London side.

James, who has dealt with injury setbacks this season, has recently returned to full training and could be available for Chelsea’s upcoming fixture against Nottingham Forest.

Lookman’s rise since his switch to Spain has been rapid, with the 28-year-old making an immediate impact on his debut by scoring in a 5-0 Copa del Rey victory over Real Betis.

He has gone on to register seven goals and four assists in 19 appearances across all competitions, including standout performances against FC Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League and Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu.

In doing so, Lookman became the first Nigerian player to score for Atlético Madrid, underlining his strong start to life at the club.

Despite suffering an adductor injury during the Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad, he has since returned to action, featuring in a recent draw against Arsenal FC.
