A London court has cleared former Petroleum Resources Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke of bribery charges filed by UK authorities.
The Southwark Crown Court dismissed the case after a jury took over 46 hours to find her not guilty on all six counts.
The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) accused her of accepting bribes to influence multi-million-pound oil and gas contracts during her time in office.
She was tried alongside oil executive Olatimbo Ayinde and her brother, Doye Agama, all of whom pleaded not guilty.
Prosecutors claimed Alison-Madueke received luxury items, high-end properties, and other benefits from individuals seeking favors in Nigeria’s oil industry.
They argued that Nigerian businessman Kolawole Aluko spent millions on luxury goods and real estate linked to her.
Her defense asserted she had limited authority over oil contract approvals, emphasizing that key decisions involved multiple agencies and established procedures.
They also pointed out that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation’s leadership primarily controlled operations, with the ministry overseeing rather than directly managing.
A written statement from former President Goodluck Jonathan was entered, stating it was common for third parties to make payments on ministers’ behalf during official international trips.
With the verdict, the UK criminal case against Alison-Madueke, Nigeria’s petroleum minister from 2010 to 2015, concludes.
