Lockdown: SA man arrested while smuggling lover via car boot

A South African man has been arrested by the police for "smuggling his girlfriend," in the back of a car, according to reports.

The couple who defied the government's lockdown order was arrested in the Gauteng province, an official confirmed.

According to reports, the woman was also arrested for "consenting to be smuggled."

President Cyril Ramaphosa on 24 March initiated a three-week lockdown which has since been extended until the end of April.

The lady was found in the car boot of her boyfriend who doesn't have a permit.[BBC]

Both of them were arrested on Friday during a security check at a roadblock in the province on their way to the eastern Mpumalanga province.

A member of the Gauteng executive council Faith Mazibuko tweeted that "A man was arrested at the N12 roadblock on Friday, 17 April, for attempting to smuggle his girlfriend out of GP to MP, without a permit.

"Law enforcement asked the man to open the boot to search, they found a lady inside. She was also arrested, she consented to be smuggled."

South Africa has recorded a total of 3,158 coronavirus cases and 54 deaths so far, according to Worldometers.
