Like PDP, Labour Party suspends its National Chairman, gives reason

Julius Abure, the national chairman of the Labour Party, has been handed a suspension by a ward in the Edo state chapter of the party over alleged anti-party activities.

Abure's suspension is coming a week after the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, was suspended by his ward in Benue state, Daily Trust reported.

Ayu's suspension at the ward level led to his removal as the leading opposition national chairman as a high court in the state later ordered him because of the suspension.

Martins Osigbemhe, the chairman of the ward, disclosed at a press conference that Ayu was suspended by the exco until the court determines the numerous petitions and cases against him. However, Mallam Farouk Umar, the party's national secretary, said the suspension is illegal and cannot stand.

According to Umar: “They also made some spurious allegations against him which is untrue and concocted by the sponsors of the Press Conference. We however deemed it fit to make some responses."

He further added that Osigbemhe and others present at the press conference are not members of the Labour Party in Edo state, adding that the executive at the state and ward levels are well known to the national executives.

He stated that the Labour Party's constitution is clear on who has the right to suspend a member and who cannot and that Osigbemhe did not have the right to suspend the national chairman.
