Lampard hails Onyeka’s ‘outstanding’ debut in Coventry win

Coventry City head coach Frank Lampard has lavished praise on Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka following his debut for the club.

Onyeka starred, guiding Coventry to a convincing 3–1 victory over Middlesbrough F.C. in the Sky Bet Championship on Monday night.

The victory propelled Lampard's side to the summit of the Championship table.

Speaking in his post-match reaction, the former Chelsea manager showered praise on the Nigerian midfielder for his brilliant debut performance.

“He was outstanding – the energy, the ball-winning,” Lampard said.

“He did great. He was so visible to the eye — you know, his pressing, his break-up play and quality on the ball. He reads situations and gets on the move so quickly. He can eat up ground, and he can play as well.

“When you bring in a player of that level, I think it gives everybody a lift. I expected that from him. He’s played in the Premier League and for his national team, but it’s not easy coming into a game at that level in this league. It’s tough and it just looked like it was there.”

Onyeka joined Coventry on loan until the end of the season. The deal includes an obligation to sign the 28-year-old on a permanent deal should Coventry secure promotion to the Premier League.
