The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have mobilized at the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) offices in Lagos and Abuja.

The unions are protesting the recent hike in electricity tariffs for customers classified under Band A.

Footage from the scene shows numerous members of organized labour groups staging demonstrations at the entrances of the NERC buildings.

The tariff increase, which was sanctioned by NERC on April 3, 2024, raised the cost for Band A customers from N66 to N225 per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

Band A customers typically benefit from 23 to 24 hours of electricity supply daily.

Nevertheless, the tariff hike has sparked widespread dissatisfaction among Nigerians, prompting calls for a reversal and renewed negotiations on the matter.

On the morning of Monday, May 14, 2024, at approximately 9:40 am, organized labour representatives gathered at the NERC's Novel House location in Ikeja, Lagos, to voice their opposition to the increased charges.

Reports have emerged that Labour unions have also closed down NERC offices in various state capitals, including Jos, Akwa Ibom, Benin, and Kaduna.

In Lagos, NLC chairperson Funmi Sessi addressed the workers, urging them to leave their offices.

Meanwhile, in Abuja, union members converged on the NERC office situated in the Central Business District.
