A Kano State High Court has sentenced two men to death by hanging for killing a newly married man during a late-night robbery in the state.
The convicts, Aliyu Hussaini and Amir Zakariyya, residents of Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters and Unguwar Malam Quarters in Kumbotso Local Government Area, were found guilty of conspiracy, armed robbery and culpable homicide in the death of Yazid Haruna.
Delivering judgment, Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu ruled that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, describing the attack as brutal and disturbing.
Prosecuting counsel, Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, told the court that the incident occurred at about 2.47am on June 11, 2025, in Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters.
The defendants reportedly armed themselves with long knives and a machete, attacked the victim, and robbed him of two mobile phones and N19,500.
Haruna was stabbed multiple times and later died from his injuries.
Although the defendants denied the charges and pleaded for leniency, the court convicted them under Sections 97(1), 298(c), and 221(a) of the Kano State Penal Code. Each was sentenced to one year imprisonment for conspiracy, life imprisonment for armed robbery, and death by hanging for culpable homicide. The pair had earlier been sentenced to death in October 2025 for killing a lecturer in a separate robbery case.
