The Biafra Republic Government in-Exile has declared that June 12, Democracy Day, is hereby banned in the Southeast.

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Biafra, Simon Ekpa made this known in a post shared on his X page.

A group called the Biafra Liberation also made the post and urged residents to go about their normal businesses.

“June 12 is banned in Biafra land. Everyone must go about their normal businesses, as ordered by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Biafra, His Excellency Mazi Simon Ekpa,” the post read.

Today, June 12, the federal government declared it a national holiday as the country marks the 25th anniversary of Democracy Day after transitioning from military rule.

However, Simon Ekpa countered the announcement of the federal government saying the people of Biafra do not believe in June 12.

He added that May 30 is the recognized day for such celebration and public holiday in Biafra land. On this day, millions of people died during the Civil War between July 6 1967 and January 1970.

Simon Ekpa said on Monday, June 10, 2024, “The Nigeria public holidays are no longer recognized as an official National Day within Biafra Territory. We only recognize the 30th of May.

“Biafrans will continue to observe international holidays while we look forward to the official national holidays upon declaration of the restoration of Biafra Independent,” he said.
