The chairperson of the caretaker committee of the Ikwerre Local Government Area in Rivers State, Darlington Orji, has reportedly appointed over 300 assistants.

Orji made these appointments just days after Governor Siminalayi Fubara inaugurated him and 22 others as caretaker committee chairmen of the 23 LGAs.

Reports indicate that the list posted on Facebook includes 311 aides.

The appointees consist of special assistants, senior special assistants, and executive assistants.

Prior to this, the caretaker chairman of the Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, Chijioke Ihunwo, had announced the appointment of 100 special assistants, listing their names without specifying their portfolios.

The large number of aides has sparked significant reactions from Nigerians on social media.

“Who are these people, for God’s sake?”

Some believe that the appointments are a strategy by Governor Fubara’s camp to strengthen and expand his political base as he seeks to free himself from the influence and control of his predecessor, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
