Japa faces setback as Trump suspends US Green Card Lottery after deadly Brown University shooting

President Donald Trump has ordered the suspension of the United States' diversity visa (green card lottery) programme following a d+adly sh% %ting at Brown University that claimed two lives.

The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Claudio Neves Valente, a Portuguese national, entered the US through the diversity visa programme in 2017 and was later granted permanent residency. He was found d+ad on Thursday in New Hampshire, in what authorities believe was a self-inflicted g+nsh%t wound.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the suspension, saying the decision was taken under Trump's directive to prevent further harm to Americans. She described the programme as "dang+rous" and said it had previously been flagged by Trump during his first term.

US officials also believe Neves Valente was responsible for the k+lling of Massachusetts Institute of Technology
(MIT) professor Nuno Loureiro earlier in the week. Investigators linked both cases using CCTV footage, witness accounts, and vehicle evidence.

The diversity visa programme grants up to 50,000 visas annually to applicants from countries with low immigration rates to the US through a random selection process.

Noem referenced a 2017 New York City truck att@ck carried out by Sayfullo Saipov, who also entered the country via the same visa programme, as justification for the latest action.

Brown University confirmed that Neves Valente was once enrolled as a PhD student in physics more than two decades ago but had no current affiliation with the institution.

The Brown University sh%%ting occurred on 13 December during final exams, leaving two students d+ad and nine others inj·red. Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive for the att@cks.
