The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has disclosed that approximately 173,387 candidates from the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will retake the exam due to technical issues, unusually low scores, and alleged irregularities.
JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, announced this during a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday. Visibly emotional, he accepted full responsibility for the staff's negligence, stating that 65 centres in Lagos and 92 centres in the Owerri Zone, covering the five South East states, will conduct the re-examination.
“What should have been a moment of joy has changed due to one or two errors,” Oloyede said.
The examination body said it processed 1,955,069 results. Of these, 4,756 candidates (0.24%) scored 320 or above, marking top-tier performance, and 7,658 candidates (0.39%) scored between 300 and 319, totaling 12,414 candidates (0.63%) with scores of 300 or higher.
Additionally, 73,441 candidates (3.76%) scored between 250 and 299, and 334,560 candidates (17.11%) scored between 200 and 249.
A significant 983,187 candidates (50.29%) scored between 160 and 199, typically the minimum for admissions in many institutions.
Furthermore, 488,197 candidates (24.97%) scored between 140 and 159, 57,419 candidates (2.94%) scored between 120 and 139, 3,820 candidates (0.20%) scored between 100 and 119, and 2,031 candidates (0.10%) scored below 100.
