Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has warned African leaders to be cautious of their decisions as a wave of youth discontent sweeps across the continent.
He made this statement during an interview with Kenyan Television JKLive during his visit to Kenya.
According to Obasanjo, the youth have nothing to lose as they are jobless, disempowered, and living in poverty while witnessing their leaders display obscene wealth.
The former head of state noted that African countries are blessed with natural resources meant to benefit their citizens.
He stated that if leaders are not mindful of their policies and decisions, it will become extremely ugly for everyone.
He said, “If you have nothing to gain, you are jobless, you are not empowered, you are in poverty, and then you see your leaders and some of them in obscene affluence, what would you do? You are a human being and the resources of your country are provided by God for the benefit of all the citizens of that country. It’s just the beginning and if no adequate attention is paid to the needs of the youths in Africa, the atom would turn to winter and it will be very ugly for all of us.”
In Nigeria, the youths are planning to embark on a nationwide protest to express their grievances on the economic hardship in the country.
The protest is scheduled to hold at the end of the July and continue through August.
