It’ll be costly mistake for Fayemi, APC to pick candidate outside South – Commissioner

Ekiti State Commissioner for Public Utilities, Bamidele Faparusi Ekiti State Commissioner for Public Utilities, Bamidele Faparusi

Ekiti State Commissioner for Public Utilities and All Progressives Congress governorship aspirant, Bamidele Faparusi, said on Thursday, November 18, that anything short of positioning candidates from the South Senatorial District for the 2022 governorship election in the state would be a costly mistake for the party.

Faparusi, a former member of the House of Representatives, who said that North and Central senatorial districts of the state had produced the governors since the creation of the state in 1999 while the South was yet to produce one, said, “This time around, people are agitating that there should be balance of power in Ekiti State. I agree with the agitation”.

The commissioner, said that Governor Fayemi would be putting the party in a difficult situation if he endorsed any aspirant outside the South Senatorial District.

He dismissed rumours that the governor had endorsed a particular aspirant, describing such as handiwork of ‘lightweight politicians’ who he said were out to deceive the public and party.

Faparusi said, “As a senior official of this party, there has not been any forum where such (endorsement) has been discussed. Even, if this should be discussed, it would be a candidate from the South, not from any other zone outside of the South, because that is what can win us the next election.

“It is going to be in the best interest of political parties to ensure that the next governor and governorship candidates come from the South especially my own political party, APC. It will be a costly mistake if my party, APC, should do otherwise.

“I want our party to have a candidate who can win the forthcoming election on a free and fair basis. I don’t want us to pick a candidate by error that we have to be struggling to win the election, having done a lot of work in the last three and half years to put the state back on the track of development.

“It is a matter of equity, fairness and justice that the political parties in Ekiti State should ensure that they position a southern candidate to be the governor of Ekiti State. The voters are already agitating.

“The voters are saying that they would prefer candidates coming from the South Senatorial District. That is why I am saying that to align ourselves with the flow of the masses, APC should pick its candidate from the South so that we will not be swimming against the tide.

“I am sure our stakeholders and voters in the APC will look towards South and put their votes to support a viable candidate in the South that can deliver for the party in the next election”.

The governorship aspirant, who said his focus was on the growth of Ekiti and the APC, said, “My agenda what is good for Ekiti people and what is good for our people now is for every part of this state to have a sense of belonging, not for any part to feel marginalized in any scheme of things.

“It will be quite unfortunate if we will not be able to manage the succession plan that we are working on now. It is not just about South, the South in essence is because I want what is good for Ekiti and I also want my party to win the next election,” the commissioner said.
