Is this a joke? - Reactions as U.S. praises Tinubu for fighting drug dealers and transnational criminals

The United States of America has praised President Bola Tinubu and his government for their efforts in combating drug trafficking and transnational organized crime.

During the sixth meeting of the US-Nigeria Binational Commission in Abuja, on April 29 and 30, 2024, the U.S. commended Nigeria’s fight against drug trafficking.

The U.S. delegation, led by Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell and Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Molly Phee, met with Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar, who led the Nigerian interministerial delegation.

The two-day meeting underscored the U.S. government’s commitment to supporting the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in their fight against drug trafficking.

In a statement released, it was mentioned that:

“The United States also intends to provide additional support to the NDLEA to combat the trafficking of synthetic drugs, such as fentanyl and captagon, to step up the interdiction and dismantling of clandestine methamphetamine laboratories, and to facilitate more regional cooperation on countering drug trafficking and trafficking in persons,” the statement noted.

“The United States complimented Nigeria’s substantial efforts to investigate and prosecute trafficking in persons cases, and both sides also discussed how to improve efforts internally and regionally.”

Many Nigerians stunned by the praises took to social media to express their thoughts.

This comes following the speculations during the 2023 presidential election that Tinubu was involved with drugs in Chicago, America.
