Imo Killings: Uzodinma to set up commission of inquiry

Governor Hope Uzodinma Governor Hope Uzodinma

Governor Hope Uzodinma has committed to establish a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the cases of killings in the state as a result of recent security difficulties.

He stated this on Saturday at a meeting with Imo State leaders at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Owerri, as part of festivities commemorating the 2021 Democracy Day.

The governor promised to investigate the circumstances underlying the deaths of several people during the period when Imo state was besieged by insecurity in a statement signed by his media adviser, Oguwike Nwachuku.

To this end, the governor has vowed to appoint a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the cases of homicides resulting from the recent security issues.

Uzodinma stated that a Commission of Inquiry was required so that the people of Imo get a clearer picture of what occurred a few weeks ago when some lives were lost in the state's struggle against insecurity.

Meanwhile, AA Eyitayo, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Nigerian Army's 7th Division, has called on Boko Haram militants to lay down their weapons and surrender.

This was declared by Brigadier-General Eyitao on Sunday at a press conference organized by the army in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state.

According to the Army commander, the militants are in disarray as a result of the Nigerian military's sustained shelling.

He urged the insurgents to seize the opportunity for rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

“We are not here for a bloodbath; no one enjoys seeing people die.

“Since some of them (insurgents) listen to the media, it's a good idea for us to appeal to them through the media to refrain from violence and come forward to seek forgiveness and reconciliation,” he said.
