Igbo youths want street named after Soyinka renamed

Some youths on social media are pushing for the renaming of a street named after Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka, located in Awka, Anambra State, Southeast Nigeria.

This was after a local government in Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, removed entertainer Charly Boy's name from a bus stop in the state and replaced it with rapper Olamide Baddo's name.

This has been viewed by Southeasterners as an attack, with many from the region calling for a similar response in their region. If such a call is heeded, it means any street bearing a Yoruba name in the region might be renamed.

The first target is Prof. Wole Soyinka Close in Awka, which some youths want renamed as a form of retaliation against the Southwest.

According to DON Tobechukwu Ade, with the handle on X, @Row_Haastrup, "I support this being changed to Chinua Achebe Close immediately. Since we all want to be mad."

@FAzubuike2475 said, "If igbos did nothing this people will come for they shops and houses....it is now or never...2027 is very far."

@Ofu0bi said, "Do you know how many streets in Lagos are named after Igbo people. Let's learn to pick our fight, that's the honest truth. Even in the East, they are still bickering over the change of street name, Abakaliki people want to retaliate too. Omo, Nigerians."

In response, @THETROJANBEAST said, "Una no like Wole before so why the wait abeg Change it we no care."

@TJOlaBode said, "I second that, let it be changed to China Achebe or Nnamdi IPOB Kanu. I don't give a middle finger at all."
