Following reports that the leader of the Boko Haram insurgency has been killed, the US State Department has refused to award the Islamic State faction in West Africa province (ISIS) the bounty placed on Abubakar Shekau.

An amount of $7 million is the reward for the capture of the leader, Abubakar Shekau.

In a tweet shared in the late hours of yesterday May 20, 2021, the US State Department said the bounty is not meant for a group under ISIS.

The tweet read;

“News reports today indicate that Boko Haram terrorist Abubakar Shekau blew himself up in a confrontation with ISIS affiliates. Hey, ISIS guys. To clarify: no – you are not eligible for the reward for information on his identity or location. That’s not how the program works."
