IGP Egbetokun has been kicked out - Sowore alleges

Former presidential candidate and political activist, Omoyele Sowore, has alleged that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has been removed from office.

He wrote on X, "The Illegal IGP, Kayode Egbetokun has been kicked out; he will be replaced by the fellow at FCIID in Lagos!"

This follows months of Sowore antagonising the Egbetokun, accusing him of illegally occupying the IGP post since he was above the age of service.

Sowore has repeatedly challenged Egbetokun's tenure, asserting that the police chief should have stepped down upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60.

In October 2023, President Bola Tinubu designated Egbetokun as acting Inspector-General of Police, pending approval from the National Assembly. This appointment became effective on October 31, 2023.

Due to disputes over the IGP's time in office, the Federal Government championed an amendment to the Police Act. This new law establishes a single four-year term for an Inspector-General of Police, regardless of age or length of service.

As a result, Egbetokun is eligible to remain in his position until October 2027.
