Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has announced he will represent himself in his ongoing trial after his lead counsel, Kanu Agabi (SAN), formally withdrew.
Agabi's withdrawal follows Kanu's decision to reclaim control of his case. Subsequently, all other members of Kanu's legal team also stepped down.
During the court session at the Federal High Court in Abuja, Kanu confirmed his decision to handle his defence alone, although he mentioned this could change in the future.
When asked if he wanted a new lawyer, Kanu declined, opting to continue without legal representation for now.
Meanwhile, former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has stated that he had a productive meeting on Wednesday with one of Kanu's lawyers, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, his brother Emmanuel Kanu, Barrister Wisdom Okere, and 10 others "who were arrested and brutalised" by the Nigeria Police Force for participating in a peaceful #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest at Kuje Prison.
In a post on X, Sowore stated that despite the challenges they face, they remain in high spirits as they continue to push for their release to fight against oppression.
"Unfortunately, the @FCT_PoliceNG Command further maltreated them after we parted ways on Monday, by heavily unleashing tear gas against them within their premises before detaining them at the notorious #SARS Abattoir.
"This is highly condemnable, and we will continue to demand the release of Barrister Aloy Ejimakor," knocking the "Nigeria Police Force Police, Kayode Egberokun, for his irresponsible leadership."
Kanu is facing charges bordering on terrorism and treasonable felony. He's currently in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
