Popular activist turned politician, Shehu Sani has recently shared his sad ordeal at the Abakaliki prison during the dark days of military rule.

In a Facebook post, Tuesday, December 8, he disclosed that he was in the same prison with General Shehu Musa Yar’adua, who later died in the prison.

Sani was arrested by the late Sani Abacha in 1995. According to his revelation, he was sentenced to life imprisonment alongside the Late Yar'adua by a military tribunal.

Senator Sani said he escaped being tortured like other prisoners because he was slim and in his 20s at the time, Legit said.

He also recalled that former president Chief Olusegun Obasanjo was also brought into the prison while he was there.

According to him, weeks later after Obasanjo was brought in, prominent activists and journalists like Dr. Beko Ransome Kuti, Kunle Ajibade of The News Magazine, George Mbah of Tell magazine, Ben Charles Obi of Classique were all interrogated, according to Legit.

He added: “After the interrogation, I was arraigned before a military tribunal headed by General Patrick Aziza and sentenced to life imprisonment."

“Obasanjo, Beko, and the journalists were also convicted for life. General Yaradua and others were sentenced to death.”Recall that Senator Sani recently criticized the chief of army staff, Tukur Buratai, for saying that it may take the country another 20 years to end the insurgency."

The former senator in a tweet on Thursday, December 3, said the statement implies that Buratai was misleading Nigerians when he claimed the army had recorded victories over the insurgents.
