Renowned billionaire businessman Cosmas Maduka, founder of Coscharis Group, has openly criticized the growing culture of extravagant spending and the popular slang “money na water” often used to justify it.
In a viral clip making rounds online, Maduka described the trend as a dead value system”, lamenting that the obsession with spraying money at parties and flaunting wealth publicly reflects a deeper moral decay in society.
“I’ve never heard Tony Elumelu say ‘money na water.’ I’ve never heard Femi Otedola say it, and I have never said it myself,” Maduka stated.
According to him, genuine wealth is reflected through humility and discipline, not noise or wastefulness.
He recounted that whenever he attends events where people start throwing money in the air, he quietly excuses himself because he finds such behavior irresponsible and shameful.
“When I attend a function and people begin spraying money, I simply stand up and walk away. This madness must stop,” he emphasized.
Maduka went on to say that the celebration of flamboyance and financial recklessness is misleading the younger generation, who now believe that success must be loud and showy. He warned that this mindset, popularized by some socialites, is destroying the country’s moral foundation.
“When we were growing up, wealthy people didn’t make noise. The ones shouting today haven’t really made money. We’re passing on a dangerous culture to our children, and that’s not how to build a nation with values,” he said.
The billionaire urged Nigerians to reject the “money na water” mentality and return to the values of hard work, modesty, and integrity.
Following the viral video, many Nigerians took to social media to share their thoughts, with some applauding Maduka’s stance, while others argued that spending money publicly is simply a form of entertainment and personal freedom.
The phrase "money na water”, frequently used by nightlife king Cubana Chief Priest, has since become a talking point, with some netizens tagging him in reaction to Maduka’s comments.
