I took huge financial risks to enter filmmaking – Ayo Makun

Popular comedian and filmmaker, Ayo Makun, has described his recent Trailblazer win at the Silverbird Man of the Year Award as a deeply humbling recognition that validates years of risk-taking, innovation, and consistency in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

Speaking about the honour, the comedian, popularly known as AY, told Saturday Beats, “It is deeply humbling. This award validates years of risk taking, innovation and consistency. Being recognised as a trailblazer tells me that daring to expand beyond comedy into filmmaking and live entertainment was worth it. It is not a destination for me; it is motivation to keep raising the bar.”

Over the years, AY has established himself as one of Nigeria’s most successful comedians, building a strong presence across stand-up comedy, film production and large-scale entertainment events. His work in Nollywood has also contributed to the growing global visibility of Nigerian films.

Offering advice to aspiring creatives, the comedian emphasised the importance of discipline, preparation and understanding the business side of entertainment.

“Build capacity before chasing applause. Talent is not enough. Learn the business, stay disciplined, remain consistent and never rely on shortcuts. Nigeria is challenging, but it rewards resilience and structure,” he said.

AY also reflected on one of the most difficult moments in his career—the decision to venture into film production. According to him, the transition required major financial commitments and came with significant doubts, but he remained convinced that expanding beyond stand-up comedy was necessary for growth.

“Transitioning into film production was a major risk. There were doubts and heavy financial commitments. But I believed in growth beyond stand-up comedy. I studied the market, built strong partnerships and stayed persistent. That decision expanded my brand globally,” he said.

Looking ahead, the comedian revealed that he is focused on expanding his entertainment platforms and strengthening the global reach of Nigerian content. Among his upcoming projects is the next edition of his flagship comedy show, AY Live, scheduled to hold on Easter Sunday, April 5.

On what next for him, he said, “Expansion and legacy. AY Live is coming up on Easter Sunday, April 5, and the brand is growing internationally too. I am developing new film and digital projects aimed at strengthening Nollywood’s global presence. I am also focused on expanding The AY’s Open Mic Comedy Challenge platforms that support young creatives.”

Speaking about the importance of collaboration within the African entertainment space, he noted, “There are many brilliant talents across Africa and the Diaspora. Collaboration is about timing and alignment. When vision and structure meet at the right time, great things happen.”
