Bello El-rufai, son of the former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-rufai, has said that he regrets his approach to Oby Ezekwesili, the former Minister of Education during an online banter in 2023.

Speaking in an interview with Seun Okinbaloye on the Mic On podcast, Bello noted that he waited for Oby to reach out to him after the fight, as he sees her like an aunt as a result of his family relationship with her.

He revealed that he attended the same high school with her son, and due to their closeness, he expected her to be a better person and discipline the other social media user who has insulted her father, however, she only reprimanded him.

“Oby Ezekwesili, I used to call her aunty, I won’t anymore because what she did was wrong. I simply regret the approach. As a mother, she should have done better. And the history we have with her, her mother who was like a grandmother to us. The scenario I regret was what led to it. Someone saw a picture of my father and Sanusi Lamido’s daughter and called him a Hausa pedophile. And I simply replied the person that his mother is an ‘ashawo’.

When Oby came, instead of her to call me as she would call when she wants to talk to my father, but because she wanted that validation, she wanted to seem like she’s disciplining people online, perhaps I should have done better. But I have also been waiting for her.

I went to Georgetown. Oby wrote my recommendation to Georgetown. That’s how close we were. Her son and I went to the same high school. So, if an incident like that happens and you’re a mother, a brilliant public servant but fail to reprimand someone else because you’re from the same place,” he said.

Bello stated that he has changed but he would respond to critics anytime he is sought after.

“If I insult any human being and I go home and I calm down, I regret that scenario. I will get better with time, Inshallah. I’m 36, I can still be a hot head. Maybe because of who I am, I don’t have a problem, I’m privileged, I must be perfect, that’s their problem, I’m not but I know I will get better with time.

I am no longer that person on Twitter. I don’t even have the time anymore but once in a while, if somebody falls in my radar, and think they can drag or disrespect, whether online or offline, they should bring it, I’m ready to drag, I’m an El-rufai.”
