Reno Omokri, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stated that Chief Moshood Abiola, the presumed winner of the annulled 1993 presidential election, made significant contributions to Nigeria, some of which he knows personally.
Omokri made these comments following Abdulmumuni Abiola's revelation that his father had 55 children (originally thought to be 103 until DNA testing was conducted). In an interview on Seun Okinbaloye's 'Mic On' podcast on YouTube, Abdulmumuni Abiola shared that his father had 40 wives.
"The Moshood Abiola family was not as large as people thought, just 55 children. There were 40 wives, but I believe they were around forty-something according to the will. Most of the wives had one or two children with my father," he explained.
Omokri expressed his disappointment that none of Abiola's children had defended their father after the interview aired in June stressing that nobody is entirely good and clean, including Abiola.
His reaction also comes hours after an investigative journalist, David Hundeyin described Moshood Abiola as a criminal.
During an episode of the Noble Nigeria podcast, David Hundeyin claimed that Moshood Abiola was notorious for engaging in illegal activities and involving himself in various criminal endeavors.
According to the journalist, although many people view Moshood Abiola as a good man with the best interests of the country at heart, he was involved in activities such as gun running, smuggling, and financing coups.
Hundeyin explained, “There was Tinubu and then there was the original Tinubu, MKO Abiola. Despite all of his wealth, his money was made under similar circumstances because MKO was also a criminal. There was no type of criminal activity that man was not involved in. Gun running, coup financing, smuggling of every legal or illegal commodity his hand was inside. And he made a fantastic fortune, but despite all of his money and the presidency that he wanted, they made sure he did not get it.”
In a Facebook post, Omokri wrote: "It is so sad that just a week ago, Abdulmumuni Abiola revealed that his father had 55 children (previously 103, until DNA intervened), yet not one of those 55 genuine children, or 103 supposed children that he catered for in his lifetime, could come out and defend their father's name. Not one!"
"At least, Abdulmumuni was quite talkative in that interview, as he lambasted his brother, Kola. Could he not use some of that talkativeness to defend his father?
Well, let me just say that nobody is completely clean and good. I do not believe all that has been said about the man, except they are substantiated, but Chief MKO Abiola did a lot of good that I know of."
"In the school I attended as a teenager, MKO sponsored many disadvantaged students. I can mention some of their names, but I don't want to embarrass them for being indigent. Most of them were not even Yoruba or Muslim. I would hope at least one of them, could speak up for him."
"Many people who could defend MKO Abiola are afraid of doing so because of the capacity of those making the allegations to cyber bully people. But at least his children should be able to take that risk. It is your name. Your father did too much good for you to be silent about these strong allegations, which gives onlookers the impression that your silence is consent."
"And as for Nigerians, it will be very difficult for us as a nation to get another person as socially generous and sacrificially giving as Abiola when we can believe the worst things said about him without any evidence being adduced."
"What did Bob Marley say? "How long shall they kill our prophets? While we stand aside and look?" The military sent Chief Moshood Abiola to the grave, but the media is killing him again after his death. He may not have been born again when alive, but he has undoubtedly died again in death."
"As for me and my house, I will say, may God bless Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola for what he did for Nigeria and Nigerians high and low, especially the many indigent Nigerians he sent to school, and the many more whose medical bills he paid.
Finally, may God bless us all with children who can speak for us in life and death."
