The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has reiterated that he has no regrets of dumping Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to support President Bola Tinubu.

He noted that despite being a member of the PDP, his decision was driven by his commitment to equity, justice and fairness.

In an interview with Channels Television on Tuesday, October 8, Wike claimed that he did not engage in any anti-party activities during the polls but rather stood by his beliefs.

"For the presidential election, I said I am going to support equity, fairness, and justice," he explained.

Wike mentioned that although he did not support Atiku during the presidential election, it does not stop him from supporting the PDP during other elections such as the governorship and the National Assembly.

The FCT Minister was a member of the G-5, a group within the PDP that opposed Atiku’s candidacy and Senator Iyorchia Ayu as the PDP national chairman. The other four governors include Samuel Ortom (Benue), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu).

Wike and others demanded that Senator Iyorchia Ayu and Atiku step down as PDP national chairman to pave the way for southern chairmanship, ensure fairness in the leadership structure, and support Atiku Abubakar's presidential bid. However, the PDP presidential candidate and the party leaders ignored the governors’ concerns.

Atiku Abubakar ultimately lost the presidential election to Bola Tinubu, under whose government Wike now serves as FCT Minister.
