'I had my first child at 14' - Sir Shina Peters recounts how he became a teenage father

Veteran Nigerian Juju legend Oluwashina Akanbi Peters, popularly known as Sir Shina Peters, has opened up about his early rise to fame and life experiences, revealing that he became a father at just 14 years old.

In a teaser for an upcoming episode of The Honest Bunch podcast, the Afrojuju icon reflected on his journey from childhood to stardom, describing how success came early for him despite his humble beginnings.

“I started my career at the age of 10. I had my first child at 14. I bought my first car at 13. I built my first house at 16,” he recalled.

Now 67 years old, Sir Shina Peters said he has no plans to return to active music-making, explaining that the current environment no longer inspires him creatively.

He also spoke about his fan base, noting that his music transcends ethnic boundaries. Surprisingly, he revealed that a large portion of his fans are Igbos, not Yorubas.

“About 65 per cent of my fans are Igbos, not Yorubas. They keep asking me for new songs, but I can’t just walk into a studio anymore — the atmosphere isn’t right. I don’t even know what to sing,” he said.

Despite stepping away from the spotlight, Sir Shina Peters remains one of the most respected figures in Nigerian music history — a pioneer whose sound shaped generations.
