Member of the House of Representatives (Ikeja Federal Constituency), James Abiodun Faleke, has said he does not support the Indigenous Bill proposed by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu.
The bill seeks to grant indigeneship status to Nigerians who have resided in a specific area for 10 years or were born there.
Reports had listed Faleke as one of the co-sponsors of the bill, which has been heavily kicked against by many Nigerians who say it has the tendency to erode minorities and cause chaos.
After receiving multiple mentions on X, Faleke issued a statement dissociating himself from the controversial bill.
He said, "I have noticed a number of tags and mentions on my social media platforms regarding the proposed Indigenous Bill currently before the National Assembly.
"Let me state categorically that I am not a co-sponsor of the Bill. Any suggestion to the contrary is entirely false and misleading.
"I do not support the Bill, and I believe it stands no chance of being ratified by the states. It is, therefore, unreasonable to suggest that I would align myself with such a proposal.
"I urge the public to disregard these unfounded claims and remain guided by verified facts."
