According to him, the Edo state governor doesn't deserve any democratic ballot paper

Ahead of the forthcoming governorship election in Edo, the All Progressives Congress (APC), national leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has begged voters in the state to reject Governor Godwin Obaseki.

The former Lagos state governor who disclosed this in a broadcast on TVC on Tuesday, September 15, said Obaseki does not deserve any democratic ballot paper and should be voted out.

While noting that Obaseki is not a democrat, Tinubu added that the governor did not partake in the struggle for Nigeria’s democracy, The Cable reports.

He said: “I want to appeal as a committed democrat and a leader of all democrats to our conscience and commitment to democracy, on the forthcoming election in Edo state, to reject Godwin Obaseki,” he said.

“I have suffered with many others to bring about this democratic regime, that today, we are enjoying in the country. Then, Godwin Obaseki didn’t participate in any aspect of the struggle to enshrine democracy in the country."

Tinubu who was among the APC leaders who campaigned for Obaseki for a first-term when he was elected on the platform of the ruling party accused the Edo governor going against the ideals of democracy.

The APC leader explained that Obaseki prevented 14 out of 24 lawmakers elected from being sworn in when the Edo House of Assembly.

“Today, he now comes back as a democrat wanting you to vote for him. Please, I appeal to you, reject him. Like he rejected the 14 members, you should reject him at the polls.”

“He demonstrated the act of dictatorship, lack of respect for rule of law, lack of respect for you the people who voted for those legislators prevented from being sworn-in,” he said.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alleged that it has uncovered a plan by Tinubu and other chieftains of the APC to spend N300m in buying votes during the Edo governorship election.

The campaign council of the Edo state PDP made the allegation at a media briefing in Benin City.

A spokesperson for the Edo campaign council, Chris Nehikhare claimed the N300m budgeted for the vote-buying would be sourced from council areas in Lagos state.

Nehikhare alleged that the council areas in Lagos had been mandated to contribute N15m each to finance the rigging plan.

In a related development, the former national chairman of the APC John Oyegun has refused to endorse his party’s governorship candidate Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

Oyegun who criticized the “forced exit” of Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki, from the APC rejected what he described as “primitive politics.”

According to him, Obaseki suffered unacceptable indignity while standing bravely for the dignity and pride of his people.

The former Edo state governor in a statement he issued on Monday, September 14, called the people Edo state to vote their conscience.
