The Nigerian Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi has stated that he is a billionaire in naira, not in dollars.

Obi, however, explained that billionaires are calculated in dollars.

“You know they calculate billionaires in dollars. In naira, yes, I am, in naira but not in dollars,” he said.

He further explained that dollars are the standard used to measure billionaires but maintained that he has billionaire status when his wealth is measured in naira.

“You know dollars are what they use to measure. Dollars are what they use to measure billionaires; it’s always in dollars, but in naira, yes, I am. Capital, yes,” Obi added.

Meanwhile, Obi has said he does not concern himself with what his wife wears or buys with her own money.

According to him, he can only be bothered by her choice if public money is what funds her lifestyle.

Obi said this after social media went agog following photos showing his wife rocking a Hermès Kelly handbag worth more than ₦250 million.

“I don’t know how my wife dresses or the bag or shoes she wears. I can even say now she’s actually a bit more less sophisticated. She used to be far more sophisticated before I became governor,” he said.

He added that his wife has her own money and can spend it as she chooses.

“And if she earns money and wants to buy an expensive watch, that’s her own. It’s not my business. We’re managing public money. As long as the life she lives does not in any way, bills are not paid from public money, and she’s happy with it, it doesn’t conflict my interest,” Obi said.

“That’s what I say to people. As long as what you do suits you and doesn’t conflict my interest and it’s not paid by public money, you can do it.”

On birthday celebrations, Obi said he personally doesn't celebrate birthdays but doesn't stop others from doing so.

“I don’t celebrate birthdays. I’m not into celebration but I don’t stop anybody from celebrating. As long as it suits them, it doesn’t conflict my interests, and I’m not paying the bill, I will even attend the party,” he said.
