How fans reacted to Finidi George's appointment as Super Eagles coach ahead of AFCON, WCQ games

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have named Finidi Geroge as the new head coach of the national team.

The Super Eagles have been without a coach since Jose Peseiro left the role in February after his contract concluded.

George took charge of the team during the March international break, and there was speculation as to whether he would be given the full-time job by the NFF.

The appointment comes a month before Nigeria plays South Africa and Benin in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The NFF did not name Finidi's backroom staff.

The Enyimba boss takes over a Super Eagles team that reached the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final, hoping to go a step further at the 2025 edition in Morocco.

The 52-year-old was part of Peseiro's staff for 22 months and is also one of Nigeria's greatest players.

He won the Champions League with Ajax in the 1990s and was part of the Super Eagles team that lifted the 1994 AFCON trophy, as the The Athletic reported.

George will have his work cut out for him, as he has immediately been tasked with leading Nigeria to the 2025 AFCON and the 2026 World Cup in North America.

@loldreak1 believes in credit where it is due:

"I guess it is high time we celebrated these Super Eagles legends."

"Congratulations sir Finidi, anyone who watches the Nigerian Premier League knows that this man is good."

@African_unifier had a request:

"This is welcome news; I pray that you will bring us World Cup and Afcon trophies to Nigeria."

@JohnDemas534813 was not convinced:

"I have no faith in this choice when it comes to taking the team to greater heights."
