The Christian Association of Nigeria has commended the Muslim community of Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State for their role in securing the release of 16 abducted worshippers of Bege Baptist Church.

The Christian worshippers were abducted on May 7, 2023 by some gunmen.

Reports had confirmed that 40 worshippers were initially abducted by the gunmen who stormed the church during an ongoing service; 24 of the 40 worshippers, however, escaped from their abductors.

Since their abduction, nothing was heard of the 16 worshippers until the CAN Chairman in the state, Rev. John Hayab, announced their release from captivity on Monday.

Hayab also took the opportunity to appreciate the Muslim community in the area for their contribution to securing the freedom of the abductees.

According to the CAN chairman, the community donated an undisclosed amount of money and motorcycles demanded by the bandits as ransom.

“The Muslim community where the worshippers were abducted contributed money and bought a motorcycle as part of the ransom required for the release of their Christian brothers and sisters in captivity

“This goes to show good, caring, and sincere neighbours that practically showed concern for the plight of their brothers and sisters that were abducted and their sincere wish that they return home to live together with them in peace and harmony.

“The exemplary life shown by the Muslim community in Madala should be emulated by all in other parts of the state for a united and peaceful coexistence that is needed for the overall development of the state.”

Hayab noted that the Muslim community’s gesture proves that Nigerians must learn to love one another to tackle the issue of insecurity in the country.

Hayab also disclosed that all 16 worshippers were released by the bandits on Sunday, and have since reunited with their families.
